The earliest known video game tournament took place on October 19, 1972 at Stanford University, for the game Spacewar. The grand prize at the time was a 1 year subscription to Rolling Stone magazine, the winner of the tournament was Bruce Baumgart, who won the five man free for all and Tovar and Robert Mass won the team competition. Fast forward to 2018, 46 years later and some of the prize monies for these tournaments are in the millions of dollars, the viewer ship for these tournaments has gone from thousands to over 44 million worldwide for a single tournament. Sponsorship for some of the gaming teams and players are five hundred million to a billion dollars, which makes the E-sport industry one of the fastest growing, if not the fastest growing in the sporting industry on the planet. The big question has always been, is E-sport a real sport? Due to the rise in popularity as justification designating some games as real sport. Also some point to the careful planning, precise timing and skillful execution, ought to be what classifies an activity as a sport, and that physical exertion and outdoor playing areas are not required by all traditional or non-traditional sports. E-sport competitors do have injuries, just like any other so call traditional sports would have, for example E-sport players can have and do have carpal tunnel syndrome, some will experience shoulder and back problems because of the nature of the activity the constant sitting for hours and hours, without any kind of movement can also cause their Glute muscles to stop firing, which will lead to those issues and eventually sciatic nerve pain. Carpal tunnel syndrome will rear its ugly head because of the overuse of the wrist and forearms, doing the same movements over and over again. These injuries can be avoided if E-sport players were to train specific for their sport, the way traditional sport athletes would. By getting stronger and more flexible, E-sport players would be able to play longer, have better reflexes and have longer carriers.
At the end of the day, my point is, if you're going to play E-sports, weather it's just for fun or at a professional level, why not keep your mind and body in the best condition to succeed in E-sports with less chance of injuries that will slow your progress and become real issues later on. Better conditioning will allow you to be mentally stronger and give you better focus during a competition. If you want to be the next JJOMAK, SEAGULL, XQC, SVENSKEREN or the next OVERWATCH, POKEMON, LEAGUE OF LENGENDS champion, then you should invest in a physical training program at BODYSMITH SPORT PERFORMANCE. Our training programs for E-sport players will allow you to play longer and to achieve better reaction times and help to reduce or eliminate injuries.

There seems to be an alarming trend in the fitness industry. I have been in the business for over 35 years, and I have seen a lot of crazy programs, exercises, and machines come and go. But dumbbells and barbells are still here.
Many new trainers coming into the industry seem to lack the common sense, creativity, and work ethic that allows them to be better trainers. If they don’t have 50 000 square feet of space filled with fancy training equipment, they are at a loss in trying to take their clients through a proper workout. These days, there seem to be a lot of gimmicks. We have access to all kinds of “smart” equipment. Cardio equipment can come with a built in TV! The machines can talk to you; they want to make all the adjustments for you to manage your workout. What happened to working hard and effectively? What happened to working with dumbbells, barbells, and using your own bodyweight? Oh! I know, it’s too hard. Instead, let’s just jump on this piece of equipment so it can do the workout for us! Does that work? If that’s not enough, you also have these trainers that make up ridiculous exercises for their clients. In order to do them, you would have to be trained at Cirque du Soleil. Maybe the more impressive the exercise seems, the more accomplished the client will feel. That is, until the client breaks a hip. Just a little tip: exercise is not supposed to be fun. It’s not supposed to be easy or comfortable. You should sweat. On occasion, you might puke. You will drop a few F bombs, maybe even at your trainer every now and then. But you will get results. You can get great results from your training, but you will have to work hard for them. If you are lucky enough to have a trainer with experience, your workout will be safe and well designed. You will be taught great form, and your workouts will change at the right time to avoid plateaus. To achieve great physique and cardio conditioning, you will have to leave the damn cell phone and Fit Bit in your car. Pay attention to what your trainer is showing you. Stop whining, and work hard. Big box gyms create a different fitness culture. I guess when you have 20 or more trainers competing in a gym, they must aim to outdo each other when trying to stand apart from the rest. But what about being known as the trainer with a great reputation for getting good and safe results for your clients? At the end of the day, it’s the results that count. That’s why we come to the gym in the first place! The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, its greener where you water it. |
